Jean Hall: Rooted in Breath, Not the Pose
Everyday Yoga and Movement Photography for Brands
My connection with Jean Hall goes back twenty-five years, to when she taught me yoga and I was, by her account, a slightly alarming twenty-something with a shaved head. What's grown between us since is closer to sisterhood than a client relationship, and it shows in the work: unposed, unhurried, made in the studios, meadows and homes where Jean actually practises, not staged for the camera.
This is the everyday version of the work, the natural light version. My approach as a yoga and movement photographer is to work quietly and stay out of the way until the moment between poses, the inhale before the exhale, the pause nobody choreographs. Jean's practice is slow, intentional and deeply embodied, an antidote to the performative side of yoga, and my job is to photograph that quality rather than the shape of a pose. It's the same instinct whether we're in a room with good window light or waist deep in a summer meadow.
It sits alongside the retreat photography from our trips to Costa Rica and Tuscany, inside the wider Movement portfolio, next to teachers like Anna Ashby. For a wellbeing brand or studio wanting this kind of ongoing content, my commissions page covers how that works.
If you're a yoga teacher, studio or wellbeing brand who wants imagery that actually looks like your practice, I'd love to help tell that story.
