Jean Hall taught me yoga over twenty-five years ago, back when I was a rebellious twenty-something with a shaved head and a curious mind. She thought I looked scary, I thought she was the calm in the storm. What began as a friendship has grown into a working partnership that now takes us further afield: sunrise in Costa Rica, a retreat house in Tuscany, wherever Jean is teaching next. This is where the retreat photography happens, away from the studio, following her practice into the landscape.
Retreat photography for a yoga teacher isn't event coverage. I'm not there to document a schedule, I'm there to find the moment her practice meets the place: the tide going out behind a downward dog on wet sand, the particular quiet of a wooden floor in an old retreat house. Jean's practice is grounded and Buddhist-informed, it mirrors the breath rather than the ego, and a retreat is where that shows most clearly, because there's no performance left to hide behind. That's what I'm framing for.
