Standing in the Light: A Recognition for Changing the Game in Sports Photography

Celebrating Women Who Are Changing the Game

The Women’s Sport Trust #BeAGameChanger Awards were established to spotlight individuals, teams, and organisations driving real change in women’s sport. These awards don’t just celebrate victories on the field but recognise those behind the scenes—athletes, media, and industry figures who are reshaping the way women’s sport is perceived and promoted. In 2018, I was deeply honoured to see my project, Standing in the Light, named Imagery of the Year alongside some of the most inspiring figures in sport. To be recognised among game-changers like Stacey Copeland, the World Cup-winning England Women’s Cricket Team, and campaigns such as England Rugby’s Inner Warrior was both humbling and affirming. It reinforced the importance of authentic storytelling in sport and the role photography plays in shifting perspectives.

Why Representation Behind the Camera Matters

Standing in the Light wasn’t just about capturing action shots; it was about seeing female athletes in their full power, telling their stories with honesty and intensity. Too often, women’s sport is framed through an aesthetic lens rather than one that highlights raw determination, struggle, and triumph. This project sought to challenge that, ensuring that women in sport are documented in a way that truly represents them. Being recognised by the Women’s Sport Trust meant that this perspective resonated and it mattered. It also highlighted the broader issue: we need more women behind the camera to tell these stories from a place of deep understanding. Just as we push for gender parity on the pitch, we must do the same in sports media and photography.

Honoured to Stand Amongst Trailblazers

The #BeAGameChanger Awards recognised an incredible lineup of athletes and initiatives that have made an undeniable impact:

Stacey Copeland, professional footballer turned boxer, won Individual Sporting Role Model for using her platform to challenge inequality in sport.
The England Women’s Cricket Team, who became world champions in front of a record-breaking crowd, took home Team Sporting Role Model.
England Rugby’s Inner Warrior campaign, which has worked to bring more women into rugby, was recognised as a National Inspiring Initiative.
The Tough Girl Podcast, a platform that amplifies the voices of female athletes, won Media Initiative of the Year.

To be among this company reinforces that we are collectively pushing boundaries, changing perceptions, and making sure women’s sport is seen, valued, and championed in the way it deserves to be.

Moving Forward: More Than Just a Moment

This recognition wasn’t just a career milestone; it was a reminder that the work isn’t done. Women’s sport is still fighting for equal coverage, investment, and respect. Having a female perspective behind the lens is critical to shaping a narrative that does justice to these athletes and their achievements. Awards like #BeAGameChanger shine a light on those making an impact, but the real change happens in the continued push for representation in photography, in the media, and in sport itself. This was never about just one project or one award; it’s about a long-term shift in how women in sport are seen and celebrated.
