A New Dawn for Women’s Cricket in Bermuda
Documentary Photography for Women’s and Girls Cricket
Bermuda was meant to be a holiday. The island's light made that impossible. Surrounded by sea, everything glows, and blues, turquoise and golds come back off every wall and every strip of grass. I spent part of the trip photographing the girls and women playing cricket there, in the league run under the Bermuda Cricket Board, and it turned into a self initiated documentary series rather than a week off.
Women's cricket in Bermuda has a passionate and complicated history. The national team made its international debut in 2006 and qualified for the 2008 World Cup Qualifier, then stopped, and has played no international cricket since 2012. What is happening now is a rebuild from the bottom up: young players in league kit, coaches who never stopped, families on the boundary. So I photographed it as two things at once. Portraits against a weathered green wall, made slowly, one player at a time, so that each of them gets to look like somebody. And the cricket itself, played out in front of palm trees, where the frame that carries the whole set is a set of stumps with a bail still in the air.
