Skateboarding Photography and Athlete Portraits

I photographed Tommy Calvert during a stop in London in June 2024, as he travelled towards the final Olympic qualifier in Budapest. The opportunity brought us together at a skatepark during the closing weeks of his attempt to qualify for Paris. This five-image series combines portraits of the Skateboard GB park skater with photographs of him riding the bowl, recording a moment in his development away from the competition itself.

I worked with the shape of the bowl and changed viewpoint to give each photograph a different sense of Tommy and the space around him. Looking down, I framed him against the black silhouette painted across the concrete, using the mural to make his movement readable within the wider scene. Closer to his level, the curve of the bowl leads towards his face and stance. In the airborne frame, there is space around his arms, legs and board so you can see their relationship. The portraits slow that sequence down: one shows him in a black jacket with the board across his body, while another looks up towards him against the sky.
