Women in Motorsport: Racing Beyond Barriers
The women rewriting the grid at Brands Hatch
Motorsport has long been a male-dominated world, but a new generation of fearless women is rewriting the narrative both on and off the track. I spent the 2023 British Touring Car Championship weekend at Brands Hatch photographing them: drivers pushing the limits, engineers fine-tuning the future of racing, and the crews, marshals and broadcasters who make a race weekend happen.
Racing photography usually points one way, gat the car. This project turns around. It follows a race engineer on the pit wall with a radio pressed to her ear, a mechanic working over an open engine bay, a tyre technician running an impact wrench across a Goodyear slick, a marshal walking the pit lane in a Union Jack hat, an ITV Sport reporter live from the pit lane, and driver Jade Edwards tying back her hair on the grid before pulling on her helmet. The racing is there too, the number 99 car throwing spray across a soaked circuit, a damaged BMW lifted onto a recovery truck, the chequered flag waved from the control box but the story is the people beside it.
Shot as a personal project, the series went on to win the AOP Development Bursary in 2024, recognition that this way of covering sport, close in and human, has a place alongside the long-lens grid shot. It sits alongside the rest of my women's sport and documentary work, and a companion project from the Porsche Carrera Cup at Silverstone. If you're a team, series or brand looking for motorsport coverage that shows the whole paddock rather than just the podium, let's talk
